CSA Week 12
This week we’re getting several beds planted to rye and vetch cover crops which will grow through the winter and get tilled under in the spring, adding nutrients and organic matter to the soil. Looking even further ahead, this week we’ll transplant strawberries for harvest next spring. Farm work may be exhausting – there’s always more to do- but at least there’s always plenty to look forward to!
This week we are harvesting:
- Salad & Braising Mix
- Senposai (Asian Collards)
- Eggplant (still a few coming along)
- Radishes – Cherriette
- Salad Turnips
- Broccoli and Cauliflower
- Rainbow Chard
- Peppers
- Cilantro & Rosemary
- Sunchokes, Seminole Squash, and Sweet Potatoes
CSA Notes:
- Are you ready for Thanksgiving? Your winter squash and sweet potatoes will store until Thanksgiving, so plan ahead and stock up. If you need additional produce next week to feed your family and friends, please let us know ahead of time so we can have it available for you next week.
- Half shares pick up every other week. If you are ever unsure if it is your week to pick up, do not hesitate to contact us.
- Salad Turnips also make great SOUP Turnips. I used them in a soup with carrots and lentils and seasoned with thyme and cumin. Delicious!
- Greens (like the ones in Piedmont Biofarm’s Salad & Braising mixes, Senposai, Kale, Chard, and Beet, Turnip, and Radish greens) and Peppers are both extremely high in Vitamin C. Make sure you and your family are getting plenty as cold and flu season come around!
