IRS Afterglow

As much as I would like to report on the many successful facets of the day, I can’t help but return to the letter that was sent to the IRS.

It was mailed in yesterday, with over seventy signatories!

What struck me as I reviewed the final verbiage and list of signature organizations was the vast power of B100 Community. Almost ten percent of the signatures came from North Carolina, and I sent our personal “Thank-yous” to Tobin at Triangle Clean Cities and to Anne at NCSU Solar Center for signing on.

I’m not sure who landed the support of the Metrolina Clean Cities chapter (down in Charlotte)—possibly the guys at Blue Ridge in Asheville. Rachel sent to her address book, which may have yielded a couple—Carolina Biodiesel perhaps?

Although we can’t do a trace-route on all the signatures on the letter, we can be amazed by the company we keep. I suppose this would be a much stronger entry if we had news that the IRS was going to include B100 in its interpretation of the new regulations, but in the absence of news, there is the mere fact that this “Comment” was pulled off, and was so broadly endorsed.

Emily in Philadelphia had the right idea. She alerted possible signatories early in the process. She and Sara Hope were the main drivers of the project—along with Eric the lawyer who kept crafting and re-crafting his words.

At one point the National Biodiesel Board allegedly weighed in, and wanted to check with their “litigation” folks to see if everything was in sync with their vision.

Whatever. Their vision of B100 is something you would use to get superior test results in human health effects testing.

What is truly remarkable is that there are about as many signatures below as there are members of the NBB!

It’s hard not to be in awe of an effort like this. Check out the groups who backed the vision of the B100 community:

The "San Francisco Biofuels Cooperative" website is up and running!

We are currently working on choosing a logo, check back for updates in the future.

Remarkable. There is power in numbers. There is even more power when there is agreement among such large numbers.

Canada has a different fight going on right now. And it has a link to the US. It is over vehicle fuel efficiencies. The Big 3 auto industry is fighting mandatory increases in fuel efficiency in Canada, and is currently suing California for proposing a mandatory increase in fleet fuel efficiency there. If Canada and California sign on, then any arguments by the car companies that they can't do it because the market is too small goes away. California and Canada combined make up 25% + of the North American car market.

Almost 10,000 people have sent their concerns to Canadian Cabinet Ministers expressing their support for mandatory fuel efficiency. You can too. And you can make a note that Canada might just be the tipping mechanism for the whole of North America, and that the government's action, or lack of it, matters for the whole continent, and by implication the world.

Go to http://www.davidsuzuki.org, and click on "urgent action required for cleaner cars."

Hi, I was windering if you could get me the contact information for some/most/all of those biodiesel groups. I am trying to form an online data base for my internship with the Bekely Biodiesel Collective, and any help would be much aprecaited. Thanks.

What's most impressive is that you don't just have the "mom & pop" BD shops on the list, but that a lot of Clean Cities organizations signed on. Since they are sponsored by the federal govmnt, that's got to pull some clout.

Perhaps the B100 community should form its own version of the NBB. After all they just started as various soy bean commodity groups. Why couldn't we put together something similar?
