Ever since Pimentel and company came out with another shot across the biofuels bow the net has been abuzz with arguments and counter arguments.
I’ve kept my head down, since energy balance is all about numbers and mathematics, and I tend to prefer poetry.
I once took a stab at the energy balance of our homemade fuel. It was a back of the envelope approach, and I published the results in an entry called Energy Balance in March of 2004.
Since then, Scott Hoover, a graduate student who lives nearby, took a much more thorough look at our operations, and came out with some remarkable findings.

There is something for everyone in Scott’s work. For the hardcore Pimentel basher there are BTU measurements with sources, and for the biodiesel enthusiast with a prurient interest in other people’s setups, there are photographs.
