I just happened on an article about these guys: VRB Power Systems Inc. out of vancouver, with a chemical storage system they are aiming at renewable power systems. Read about them here: http://www.vrbpower.com/index.html
Apparently the Sorne Hill wind farm has contracted, or is going to contract to install the vanadium storage system to provide smoothing to the wind delivery, and add peak power back-up. A bit pricey at $10 million USD was my reaction, but perhaps the system will be good for 10 years or more. (see here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorne_Hill_wind_farm)
The interesting part of this is that there are ongoing developments to make renewables more acceptable in a powergrid, most of which the provincial gov't and the OPG are not in a postion to account for, as their planning process is way to inflexible.
